Ratings: Major Crimes Returns With a BOOM as #1 Scripted Series Premiere of the Year

301- raydor2 lrMajor Crimes returned with a bang (or perhaps more appropriately, #BOOM), bringing in a whopping 6.7 million total viewers in season 3 premiere and encore last night, easily making it basic cable’s #1 scripted series premiere of the year!

Major Crimes scored 5.2 million total viewers for its 9pm showing, up sharply from the Season 2 and 2.5 premiere numbers (5.02 and 3.65, respectively), and remained steady with its season 2.5 finale, itself a record high (5.43).

In the demo Major Crimes also performed very strongly, bringing in 1.6 million adults 18-49, and 2 million adults 25-54, a 3% and 6% increase in over last summer’s season 2 premiere, respectively, and easily besting its new Monday night partner, the heavily promoted Murder in the First.

The Hollywood Reporter has called Major Crimes  “TNT’s crown jewel” in its lineup, and Michael Wright, president and head of programming for TNT, had this to say: “Major Crimes is a true mega-hit as it enters its third season, with an ensemble cast that’s second to none.”

Congrats to the cast and crew on what is sure to be a record-breaking season!

James Duff Talks Major Crimes Season 3

304 raydor sanchez tao lrIn a new interview with TVGuide.com Major Crimes creator James Duff teases a little of what we can expect in Major Crime season 3, including a difficult reunion for Rusty, a secret that may come back to bite Flynn and a possible romance for one of the team members.

“The theme of our first 10 episodes this season is expectations,” creator James Duff tells TVGuide.com. “We have an expectation of a lot of things in our lives that it turns out that we have no right to expect. Family is not a given. Family is something you are sometimes obligated to create for yourself and that you embark upon with other people.”

Indeed, over the first two seasons, Capt. Sharon Raydor (Mary McDonnell) has built a new family dynamic with Rusty (Graham Patrick Martin), an orphan whom she originally took into her home while he prepared to testify as a witness in a murder case. But just when it seems like Sharon might be ready to make their arrangement more permanent, Rusty gets a surprise: His mother (Ever Carradine) returns to his life.

“We begin our first episode with a different Rusty,” Duff says. “He has changed quite a bit. The experience of testifying on his own and having his say in the courtroom, reduced the whining, reduced the teenage angst. He’s sort of moving beyond and looking into his own heart and how he can make things better. Then, out of the blue, he’s knocked off stride by the reappearance of [his mother] who he had thought he was separated from for good.”

And Rusty has no plans of sharing the surprise with Sharon — at least not right away. “You get close to someone, but that doesn’t mean that on certain intimate issues you are inflexibly honest,” Duff says. “Sometimes we like to sort out our own feelings about circumstances before we involve the people who are closest to us, and that doesn’t mean there’s a loss of love or a loss of respect. It means there’s fear and anxiety. The anxiety he has about his mother will reveal itself, and he [does] introduce his mother to Sharon,” Duff says. “His mother has a very different take on where he is in life than Sharon does.”

But Rusty’s dilemma is only half of the story. His mother’s return comes just as Sharon begins to consider making her arrangement more permanent by legally adopting him. That will raise the eyebrows of Sharon’s “real” family, including her husband Jack (Tom Berenger) and her yet-to-be-cast son Ricky. “As she moves forward to adopt Rusty  — or as the questions appear: ‘Should I? Do I want to be [his mother]?’ — her already established family weighs in in different ways,” Duff says. “How do you include other people? What does the word family mean? Do you have any right to expect that your family will always be exactly what it is?”

Of course, the Major Crimes work family dynamic will also be explored. “There will be more personal life stuff,” Duff says. “Sykes [Kearran Giovanni ] gets flowers [in the premiere]. Who did they come from? Is she dating somebody? Flynn [Tony Denison] keeps talking about his daughter. His daughter is going to show up, and he keeps pretending to his family that he and Sharon are closer than they are. How long is he going to get away with that?”

Tony Denison Talks Major Crimes Season 3

218-41-flynn In a new interview with TVWise, Tony Denison talks about the upcoming season of Major Crimes, working with co-star G.W. Bailey, and the incredible staying power of the show.

“TVWise: Major Crimes has been a huge success for TNT and is now heading into its third season, how does it feel to know that the fans are still embracing the show?

Tony Denison: It’s wonderful. I don’t want this to sound like an obvious answer, but it is. We had this great ensemble for seven and a half years on The Closer and then we had some personnel changes. Then all of a sudden, Mary McDonnell moves to the head of the squad. The transition was effortless, even for us as actors playing the same characters. It’s funny because Raymond Cruz and I thought Major Crimes was going to be a hit; not in an arrogant kind of way, but we thought it is almost the entire same cast and the same production team led by James Duff. If The Closer was a hit, why wouldn’t we be a hit? I know losing Kyra was a concern for a lot of people. She was great to work with those seven years, but I didn’t doubt we would be a success. I thought we would at least be as successful as The Closer, but never thought we would be more successful which is great.

TVWise: With so many police show on television, what do you think separates Major Crimes from the rest of the pack?

Tony Denison: It’s really a nuts and bolts cop show. I remember seeing an interview with Jimmy Breslin once and he said that at the end of the day, most crimes are solved by old fashion shoe leather. That is exactly what we are about, old fashioned shoe leather. We are out there walking a case, we walk it back. We are just doing what real cops do. They go door to door; they talk in the squad room and they bullpen ideas around. Then they just go out and work the case.

TVWise: One of the more interesting dynamics on the series is the relationship between Flynn and Provenza. What is it like working with G.W. Bailey?

Tony Denison: Working with G.W. is wonderful. I genuinely really love the guy. He does a lot of work with different charities which is wonderful as well. He’s great to work with and we play off each other really well. If one of us has an idea and tells the other person and if we can make it work without it being disruptive to the plot, we will try to improv some stuff. It’s just a great relationship. I’ll also defer to GW sometimes during a scene because he is very knowledgeable as an actor and he is very honest with his feedback which helps me.

TVWise: There has definitely been a change in the relationship between Lt. Flynn and Sharon Raydor since the first season. What can fans expect going into season three?

Tony Denison: I think what’s going to happen is that the dialogue is going to shift. It happens in all working environments. How it’s going to shift and when is it going to shift specifically, I don’t know. I don’t know what it’s going to sound like or when that overt shift is going to happen, but right now there is this little hint of something. I guess somebody could say that is it moving slow, but why not? We may be on the air for another four or five seasons, so why not have it move whatever way it is supposed to move. I don’t think that anything should be rushed no matter what it is. Whether it is the relationship between Sharon and Andy or if any of the other character has a love interest or family issues or something. I like watching things develop slowly because that’s how it is in real life.

TVWise: Playing a cop on The Closer and now Major Crimes, when you aren’t working, are you more aware of your surroundings?

Tony Denison: Yes and no. I like to always think that I was always somewhat street smart and street savvy. Now I find myself looking at things and noticing things that are peculiar with people. So, does the cop role rub off on me? Maybe. I don’t know. I’ve always had a good magnet for knuckleheads on the street and I would keep my guard up just in case.

TVWise: One of the understated aspects of the series is its comedy. How important is the comedy to the show and its characters?

Tony Denison: It’s very important. In fact, there was an episode a while ago where my character cracks a joke at a crime scene and everyone laughs. Mike Berchem, who is the lead detective for the city of Los Angeles and is now a writer and executive producer on the show told me that is the kind of stuff they do. If you think about all the crime scenes that they see and the horror that they come upon, they needed a way to release that tension or they would all go mad. There was one murder scene that we did one time where a little girl was killed by her step brother. Even though the scene was a recreation, it still got to me because it was so gruesome. I went to Mike Berchem afterwards and asked him how they hell do you do this? Cops have to find a way to maneuver around that stuff emotionally or again, they’d go mad.

TVWise: The show has some amazing writing. Do the actors have to stick strictly to the script or is there room for ad lib/improvisation?

Tony Denison: Well James Duff has been very generous with G.W. Bailey and I. He’s allowed us a little bit of latitude. If I throw in an ad lib, I do it either at the beginning of a scene or at the end of a scene. If I do it that way, it gives them the opportunity to cut it out if they don’t like it, but if they like it, they leave it in. We don’t do it every single scene, but every once in a while. Sometimes we’ll get an idea and we go to the writers before we start shooting and ask if we can try it. They let us try and sometimes they use what we come up with. That is generally how it works. I am one of those guys who really believe in a third eye. I may have instincts or my guy may tell me something, but you need that third eye around; that director, writer or producer who can be an arbiter. That’s the way I was trained in the theater.

TVWise: Will we get to learn more of Flynn’s history in the third season?

Tony Denison: I’m not trying to be coy, but I am under the impression that there is going to be some stuff from Flynn’s past that will be introduced in the storyline, but I don’t know what it will be. Many of the characters from the show have had things from their past or background used in storylines. There’s tone, which is the overall theme or the atmosphere that James Duff is looking for and in that tone, there is texture; the elements that make us all human, frail and humble.”

Bailey, Tony Denison, Michael Paul Chan, Raymond Cruz, Phillip P. Keene, Kearran Giovanni, Graham Patrick Martin, Jonathan Del Arco with Robert Gossett.

Major Crimes explores how the American justice system approaches the art of the deals as law enforcement officers and prosecutors work together to score a conviction. In the series, McDonnell stars as Los Angeles Police Captain Sharon Raydor, who heads up a special squad within the LAPD that deals with high-profile or particularly sensitive crimes. Her team of investigators includes G.W. Bailey as Lieutenant Provenza, Tony Denison as Lieutenant Andy Flynn, Michael Paul Chan as Lieutenant Mike Tao, Raymond Cruz as Detective Julio Sanchez, Kearran Giovanni as Detective Amy Sykes and Phillip P. Keene as tech expert Buzz Watson. Robert Gossett plays Assistant Chief Russell Taylor, Raydor’s boss, while Jonathan Del Arco plays Dr. Morales, the medical examiner. And Graham Patrick Martin is Rusty Beck, a formerly homeless teen who has been taken in by Raydor.

This summer on Major Crimes, Jon Tenney will return as Agent Fritz Howard, who serves as the main liaison between the LAPD and the FBI. He also happens to be the husband of the former head of the squad, Brenda Leigh Johnson. Tom Berenger will be back as Jack Raydor, Capt. Raydor’s estranged but endearing husband who doesn’t always play by the rules. Bill Brochtrup will return as Dr. Joe Bowman, Rusty’s therapist who used chess as a way to get through to his client. And Malcolm-Jamal Warner will be back as Lt. Chuck Cooper, an undercover officer who helped hunt down a killer who targeted Rusty.

Ransford Doherty will return this season as Coroner’s Investigator Kendall, who often handles the initial crime-scene examinations of victims in the squad’s cases. And Kathe Mazur will be back as DDA Andrea Hobbs, the no-nonsense prosecutor who handles the legal side of the squad’s cases. Also this summer, Andrew Daly will return as Richard “Dick” Tracy, the eager wannabe detective he originally played in the fifth season of The Closer. And Azita Ghanizada will play Angela Soames, who works for a potentially shady cryogenic facility.

Cases the squad will be called upon to investigate in season three of Major Crimes include the disappearance of two kids and their father, the death of the defendant in a rape trial and a complex case involving arranged marriages and diplomatic immunity. In addition, one of Sanchez’s old cases will resurface when it turns out a man he put away for manslaughter might be innocent. And Provenza and Flynn will be drawn to a ritzy estate to investigate the murder of a dog, but they’re going to have to solve the case with unwanted help from an amateur sleuth they’ve encountered before. On the home front, Sharon Raydor will try to help Rusty put his turbulent past behind him, a goal made far more difficult when a member of the young man’s biological family returns, threatening Rusty’s hard-won stability.

TNT’s Major Crimes launched in 2012 and finished its first season ranking as basic cable’s #1 new series of the year. In 2013, the drama was one of basic cable’s Top 10 series of the year, averaging 6.8 million viewers for its second season. Among key demos, Major Crimes drew more than 2.1 million adults 25-54 and 1.6 million adults 18-49 in season two.

Created by James Duff, Major Crimes is produced by The Shephard/Robin Company and Walking Entropy, Inc., in association with Warner Bros. Television. Duff, Greer Shephard, Michael M. Robin, Rick Wallace, Adam Belanoff and Leo Geter serve as executive producers.
